Planning Your Trip to Mexico

Mexico is filled with cultural and historical sights. When planning your trip, you should decide on the following:

  • City or cities to visit
  • Sights to see
  • Festivals
  • Season or weather
  • Travel by airplane or cruise ship

If cost is a factor in your vacation planning, you should research various packages which include travel and hotel. You can find a number of inclusive packages on the Internet as well as with your local travel agent. You may find the best rates in August and September which is the rainy season or during the hottest summer months.

The type of vacation you plan has a lot to do with how much you budget for your trip. If you just want to relax and lie on the beach, you will want to find a hotel that is on or close to a beach. If you do not plan to do any special sightseeing other than going into town to visit a local market, you will want amenities at your hotel such as a restaurant and/or room service.

If you are the adventurous vacationer, you may want to plan a trip that includes a number of cities. Cruise vacations to Mexico offer stops at several Mexican ports. You can also purchase tickets for different types of sightseeing excursions.

What is the best season? August and September are generally the months that get the most rain throughout Mexico. This also coincides with hurricane season which affects both the East and West coasts. It is a very hot and humid during this time of the year.

Each region of Mexico differs slightly in temperature. The Central Mexican region sits on a high plain and has cool nights during the summer. The coastal regions are always warm and can be very hot in summer.

Taking a winter vacation trip to Mexico can be pleasant. Most of the coastal beach cities and resorts have temperatures ranging in the 70s and 80s. In the higher Los Cabos elevations of Central Mexico, daytime highs vary from 50F to 70F. It can be cold at night getting down to near or below freezing.

Throughout the country festivals and celebrations are observed. Since most festivals and observances are held at the same time throughout the country, you can choose just about any city and have a great vacation. If there is a particular festival or observance you have heard about and you plan your trip at that time, make sure you request any tickets you may need at the time you book your trip. You should also make sure you book your trip as far in advance as you can because hotels may fill up.

One of the largest celebrations is Carnaval, or Carnival. It is celebrated five days before Ash Wednesday, usually the first week in February. This Carnaval is similar to the one in Rio and what is celebrated as Mardi Gras in the United States. There are parades, parties, and dancing in the streets.

Other nationwide celebrations include Cinco de Mayo, May 5th. This celebrated as Mexico's Independence Day when the army defeated the French in 1862 at the Battle of Puebla. Mexico is predominantly a Christian country and celebrates Christmas with mini-fiestas beginning in mid-December to celebrate the journey of Mary and Joseph leading up to Christmas Day.

When you travel to Mexico is, of course, a personal preference. Research the various regions and cities and find just the right time for your perfect Mexican vacation.
